More and more...

In my devotions, I was reading in 1 Thessalonians, when I came across something interesting. At least interesting to me. Paul used the words “more and more” a couple of times…

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. (1 Thess 4:1)

Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, bothers, to do so more and more. (1 Thess 4:9-10)

Why more and more? They are already living to please God. They are already doing the things that they were taught. They were already loving. Paul had no problems with anything they were doing! So why more and more? Why did he urge them in the Lord Jesus to keep doing more and more?

In the next chapter, he tells us. I’m going to show you what exactly he said in tomorrow’s post, but he tells them that Christ is coming. It’s “more and more” important now, because it’s closer.

I believe in my heart that Christ’s coming is closer now than ever before. We are seeing things that are happening that can only be interpreted as the “birth pains” from Jesus’ signs of the end of the age in Matthew 24:8.

In light of this, I urge you to love more and more. I urge you to read God’s Word more and more. I urge you to love more and more. I urge you to come to the community of believers that is the church more and more.

It’s just more and more important than it’s ever been.
